Sonja Cox

Sonja M. Cox — President, SMECO Solar LLC; President and Chief Executive Officer, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.

Cox began employment with SMECO on January 11, 1999, and served as senior vice president and chief financial officer from 2006 to 2020. Prior to joining SMECO, Sonja was employed with a not-for-profit organization as Controller. From 1983 to 1990, she was with Carolina Power and Light Company, now Duke Energy, at the Robinson Nuclear Project Department in Hartsville, South Carolina, as a Cost Control Specialist.

She is a graduate of the Leadership Maryland Class of 2010 and serves on the Board of Directors as Immediate Past Chair of the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Sonja currently serves as a Trustee on the Board of the College of Southern Maryland and as Treasurer of the Board of Southern Maryland Community Resources, Inc.

Cox holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maryland and a Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University, and she is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Maryland. She resides in Leonardtown, MD with her husband, Robert. They have three children.
